Festivals Edinburgh

Festival or Organisation Name:

Festivals Edinburgh

Festival or Organisation description:

Edinburgh’s Festivals energetically inhabit Scotland’s capital city, offering astonishing opportunity and inspiration for Scottish and international artists and audiences.

Each year, the festivals attract more than 4.5 million attendees across over 50,000 individual performances in more than 300 venues involving more than 25,000 artists.

The Festivals are world-famous, and their appeal is manifold.

  • Edinburgh’s Festivals as a whole contribute £313 million to the national economy.
  • The Festivals and the vibrant cultural life they generate are a major factor in making Edinburgh one of the most attractive places in the UK to live, work, invest and visit.
  • Edinburgh’s Festivals are a magnet for audiences and artists from around the world, the only truly grand-scale living showcase of the international performing arts.
  • They are the only Scottish event to attract the cream of the international cultural sector - international festival directors, programmers, cultural planners and strategists- drawn by the festivals’ astonishing wealth of culture and its irresistible sense of significance.

Put simply, Edinburgh’s Festivals are a truly world-renowned, internationally-famous cultural phenomenon.

The founding principles of the Edinburgh International Festival, back in 1947 - to enliven and enrich the cultural life of Europe, Britain and Scotland and to ‘provide a platform for the flowering of the human spirit’ after the devastation of World War II - are just as relevant today as they were at the time and formed the start of a rich and fascinating festivals history.

Edinburgh’s major Festivals have continued to grow in numbers and in strength over the decades. During the peak month of August, multiple Festivals coincide, creating what is widely regarded as the greatest show on earth.

The city population doubles as artists and artlovers flock to enjoy the work of the Edinburgh International Festival, the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Edinburgh International Book Festival, Edinburgh Art Festival and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.

Edinburgh’s Festival season is not limited to August, however, with a number of other major events taking place throughout the year: Edinburgh’s Hogmanay (Dec/Jan), the Edinburgh International Science Festival (Apr), Imaginate Festival (May), the Edinburgh International Film Festival (Jun), the Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival (Jul) and the Scottish International Storytelling Festival (Oct).
